THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as Rahul Gandhi undertakes the Bharat Jodo Yatra against communalism, the CPM leadership has attacked the yatra for lack of a clear political position. In an article published in party spokesman Deshabhimani on Thursday, CPM Secretary of State MV Govindan said Congress had lost its relevance in current politics. Unsurprisingly, the congressional leadership wasted no time in fighting back.

Harshly criticizing Congress for its flawed policies, Govindan said Congress appears to be on a path of self-destruction, thanks to its own policies. The big old party has now become totally irrelevant in national politics. Even opposition parties have begun to view Congress as a liability best avoided, he said.

Referring to the recent electoral experience in Bihar, the CPM leader said even the regional parties do not seem keen on joining the Congress as they believe it could lead to a bitter political defeat. Although the party is brandishing anti-community slogans, the masses are not yet convinced that the party is actually opposing them on the ground.

“They claim that the Bharat Jodo Yatra aims to unite the people of the country against the divisive policies of the BJP. However, the big question is how will they achieve the same by excluding BJP-led states like Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh? “said Govindan.

Congress quickly retaliated by saying that it was not for the AKG Center to decide the route of the yatra. Speaking to the media on Thursday, opposition leader VD Satheesan recalled Govindan’s earlier comments that the CPM would not criticize the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Now he appears to have changed his stance, Satheesan said. Questioning the CPM, he says that it is not the AKG Center, but the Congress which decides the itinerary of the yatra.

“The Bharat Jodo Yatra is not held against the CPM, but rather aims to unite the country. This is part of a fight against fascism and communitarianism. Why does the CPM get angry when we criticize Narendra Modi and speak out against fascism and communalism? Neither Pinarayi nor the CPM are on the yatra’s agenda. How does Rahul Gandhi staying in a container become the headache of CPM? asked Satheesan.
