“We, the faculty of UCMS, appreciate and support this initiative to develop dedicated Covid infrastructure in East Delhi. However, we find that the (…) fact, there is land available (under the Delhi government) in neighboring areas, ”the letter told Jain. They also mentioned the Delhi government’s initiative to rejuvenate Delhi’s lakes and greenery and said they “understand the importance of the green environment”.
They urged Jain to “consider moving the proposed hospital to the neighboring area and thus promote sustainable development.”
“The proposed site is already a playground which is an essential feature of a medical education institute. The endangered green zone is an internationally recognized hotspot for birds. We find that the National Green Tribunal also recommends to preserve biodiversity and the green area, a recent example is from the University of Delhi, ”the letter said.
They also said that there is already a Covid management facility at the nearby Ramlila plot, which is currently underutilized.
“More so, the building in the proposed area could also make the surrounding area unsafe for girls’ homes and the nursing homes surrounding it. The political establishment at the head of the Delhi government is known for its participatory leadership in through various mohalla samitis, involvement of RWA, etc., ”they said.
Satyendar Jain recently said the government would build seven new hospitals in the nation’s capital in six months using prefabricated construction technique.
The hospitals will be located in Sarita Vihar, Shalimar Bagh, Sultanpuri, Kirari, Raghubir Nagar, GTB Hospital Campus and Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya.
