JOHANNESBURG – Protector of the public Busisiwe Mkhwebane reacted with disappointment to comments from the African National Congress (ANC) on its latest report implicating the Prime Minister of the Eastern Cape and the provincial party to profit from the irregular use of public funds .

Last week, Mkhwebane released the results of his investigation showing Prime Minister Oscar Mabuyane received money intended for wrestling veteran Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s memorial service in 2018.

The ANC accused the Québec Ombudsman of having taken a political position and of having deliberately published the report just weeks before the local elections, playing out factional wars.

However, Mkhwebane spokesman Oupa Sekgalwe said on Tuesday that was not true.

“Unfounded allegations that the office is complicit in inter-party and external factionalism, that the report was timed to coincide with the provincial ANC campaign and that the investigative report in question was ready two months ago , I reject with contempt. “
