Abia State is on the verge of a new political push with the birth of an organization, the Abia Political Movement (APM) whose members are drawn from all political parties, professional organizations and the 17 LGAs of the ‘State.
Speaking in Umuahia, the state capital of Abia earlier in the week, PAM organizer and general manager Mazi Agodi Kanu said the PAM is not a political party but a move to ensure that state political parties begin to embrace internal democracy during the selection of candidates for political office and to remove the norm of forcing a candidate against the will of the electorate.
âThe MPA is here with a strong message that all political parties must start embracing internal democracy and stop imposing candidates. Political parties must bow to the power of the electorate because the power is theirs.
Mazi Kanu also stressed that the group did not come to fight a government, past or present, or to present itself as a political party. Rather, it focuses on righting the wrongs of the past by providing credible support to credible candidates. He continued, âAPM is not funded by anyone. We also don’t have political money behind us and we are not affiliated with any political party. “
The group members in their separate speeches expressed their support and optimism for the group. The highlight of the rally was the issuance of letters of appointment and the investiture of state and area officials from the group.
Among those inaugurated is popular broadcast journalist and politician, Ms. Francess Olisa-Ogbonnaya (Tabitha) who has been appointed as media and advertising director for the organization.
