62% say a third political party is needed in the United States


Almost two-thirds of Americans say the United States needs a third major political party because the GOP and the Democratic Party “do such a bad job of representing the American people,” according to a new Gallup poll.

In the survey released Monday, 62% of Americans said the third party was necessary, while 33% said the two main existing parties were doing “adequate” work representing the majority of Americans’ political views.

This is the highest percentage of people saying the United States needs a third since Gallup began polling on the issue in 2003. The poll also marks the second lowest percentage of people who have. said existing parties are adequate after 26 percent of respondents said so in an October 2013 poll.

Both parties have favorable ratings of less than 50 percent. The Democratic Party is viewed favorably by 48% of Americans, while the GOP is viewed favorably by 37%.

Democrats are more divided, with 34% wanting their party to move left, 34% wanting it to stay the same and 31% wanting it to move right.

The Gallup poll results are based on responses from 906 American adults living in all 50 states and Washington, DC, from Jan.21 to Feb.2. The survey’s margin of error is 4 percentage points.
